Advice Needed: Guild Recruitment?

Hello, I'm Epicinsanity.

Some of you may know of me, some of you probably have no clue who I am. So let me introduce myself, and give you a little background. I am an avid World of Warcraft player, and have been playing WoW since just after release. Started my raiding career with Molten Core killing Rag 1.0 as my first raid boss. So I have been around for awhile. I raided all current content in BC, Wrath and Cata. I am the Guild Master of a small dedicated raiding guild on Uldaman US.

For more information about me, check out: http://www.anguish-uldaman.com/contact (Easier to link then type everything since I am very long winded).

So here is my issue... I have been the guild master of Anguish since its creation back in Wrath of the Lich King. I have been the raid leader, and the main tank for all of our raids. We pushed most of the Cata content, and even started on Heroic Dragon Soul before too many stacks of the nerf. The guild started getting burnt out, as did I. Then I got hit with some real life issues that were causing me to not be able to game as much, and at some points not at all. I leaned on my officers to help me out throw this time. I missed a few raids, and people stopped showing up mainly because we didn't have anyone who was willing to lead raids in my absence. I came back to find that they had basically invited a whole new chuck of raiders, and some of our raiders had left because of drama that I didn't know happened in my absence. I blame myself for the self distruction of my guild. And the lose of my raiders. It started on the top, and it moved down the hill.

So basically now I am in the spot where I have to do two things: leave the guild that I built, or rebuild the guild from scratch. We are a small guild, only 150 members, and because our main focus was raiding, people haven't been logging on due to lack of raiders. I have been logging on for the past 3 months at Raid Times and waiting to see who all shows up. Posting on our guild forums, sending emails to the whole guild, and there seems to be little interest in anything right now.

With Mists coming out in just two weeks, I was hoping some people would trickle back in, but nothing. I love raiding. And I love the guild. We were a close community of gamers who did more than just raiding. I scheduled weekly raffles to fill the guild bank with gold prizes, weekly lotteries for items/gear/gold/mounts, etc. I tried to run heroics with as many members as possible, as well as LFR when it was introduced. I have 6 lvl capped toons atm, most being healers and tanks.

I want to rebuild the guild, I'm just trying to figure out how to do so...

The server Uldaman is a low population server, and people are not interested in filling out a basic application to join a guild they don't know. Not sure if our population is just not use to this concept, or that all the main raiders are already taken. When I have invited people without applications, they end up staying for a few days, or never log in again. I want people who are dedicated and want to be here. I don't tolerate drama, hate, or anything like that.

Anyone out there have the same issues, or some good advice to help me along on trying to re-recruit and re-build a guild?

If you have direct questions and don't want to post them here, shoot me a private message. Add me on BattleTag: Epicinsanity#1952, or hit me up on Twitter @AnguishUldaman.

Want more information about the guild: www.anguish-uldaman.com

Thanks in advance for any advice, or thoughts. I will check this daily, if not more so I will get back to you quickly.

Sup Epicinsanity,

Looking at your situation I can understand where you're coming from and know that Uldaman resembles my realm Thunderhorn. First i'd like to say I can commiserate with you about a lack of recruits, not wanting to fill out applications, and all that jazz. What I'm curious about is when you leaned on your officers while you were away, obviously they didn't want to lead the guild or the raids either, are they still in guild or did they bail with the others? Is your current roster ONLY suffering from attendance or are you just not able to raid because of difficulty? How are you attempting to recruit players, are you only considering a player who will fill out an app as a plausible recruit?

As far as recruitment goes if you're having total attendance issues, you'll need to pug content, let people know who join you're recruiting, and show them the people you've got aren't invalids when it comes to the game.

If you can't complete raids because of your current roster not having the ability, you may want to re-evaluate what you want from the game, how casual you want your guild to be and adjust accordingly. You may want to consider changing your loot type, EPGP is a system that emphasizes dedication, but a normal mode only guild is always going to be a stepping stone for raiders looking to get into H mode raiding and thus (IMHO) shouldn't use an epgp system.

Like I said before, just try and pug content and impress people with your skill knowledge and demeanor in raids.

Thanks for your response!

I will start off answer your questions you asked above.

1.) Both officers are still in the guild. The three of us had the perfect balance of what was needed for our guild. We had the hardcore mentality player (Myself), the cheerleader/everyone's friend (Officer A) and the straight to the point, no sugar coating person (Officer B). All of us have and still do have a lot on our plate outside of the guild. Officer A ended a long relationship, and switched jobs. Officer B just finalized their divorce and started going back to school. Myself just got overwhealm with working threating to eliminate my job, forcing me out onto the streets. So I was spending my time job searching and working different hours which cut into my gaming time. Both officers are still semi-afk not really having much time to play wow. I am in contact with Officer B often, and usually talk guild stuff on a daily basis.

2.) Our current roster basically disappeared right after we got our Deathwing kill back in March. We got hit with raider burn out during Firelands, we raid 3 nights a week, and had a lot of issues finding consistent players. Players would join, and like you stated below, they would use our guild as a stepping stone in order to get into other guilds further advanced, or would use us for gear because we didn't have that raiding spec/class in our current raids. I wouldn't say the difficulty was there, more of just a dedication thing. Hard to replace two healers half way thru a tier.

3.) Our main recruitment is done on our server forums, which because our server isnt a fan of using them, doesn't really produce a lot of results. Mainly just trolling. I use the guild recruitment tool, and have been randomly spamming a macro in trade. Not often, but any time when I am not working on guild stuff, or trying to be productive. Even though I am not a fan of people not filling out an application, I usually talk about it up front. If they are respectful, and not all "l33t sp3ak" on me, I will usuaully basically do the application via whispers. I just open up a word document, and cut and paste the converstation from WOW into it, and post it on the officer forums.

Yeah, we used EPGP because it was a system that rewarded our dedicated raiders, and put the new raiders in a position where they couldn't just jump in and gain gear and bounce. Granted we were always too nice and would give them something if we were just going to shard it. The EPGP that we used was more of a hybred system that basically showed who had the highest EP in order to get the gear (based on Attendance, kills, and outside of raid activities/donations to the guild bank). Then the officers would have a loot council chat about it and decide from their.

I am considering switching to a SuicideKings method and using that for Mists. I had used it during most of Wrath and really enjoyed it. Just want a system that benefits people who show up and are involved, verses a /roll system that gives gear to who ever has the highest roll. Full on Loot Council isn't a system I like, its too easy to get corrupt and give things to people who don't deserve it, but are friends with the officers, etc.

We have never really had looting issues, besides when it came to the legendary staff, which resulted in us not actually completeing the questline for anyone in our guild.

Right now, since its basically 4 people that log in on a regular basis, the pugging option is hard. Our server doesn't really pug anything, and even trade chat is basically dead. Once MOP drops, I will be whoring myself out for heroics and dungeons, etc. since I tank.

A huge thank you for your comments, and I will definately take them in consideration. Feel free to respond, or tell me how annoying my wall of text is. Thanks again TheRealJamal.

May I show you my loot system, I'm GM and RL of our guild and have found this works extremely well in both giving loot to dedicated raiders over new members, keeping the ranks in your guild fair and even (not that you've expressed a concern or a problem with how you do it, just explaining why my loot/rank rules are they way they are), and something to track who's getting contested gear and who gets the next piece.

Our loot system

Are you waiting for these guys to come back into the game? do you have a plan if they dont/cant come back for mop? As far as I can tell you've done and are currently doing everything possible to find people who want to raid with you have you and your "core" considered switching guilds? that's what i can coherently say now as I'm falling asleep while typing/reading.

That loot system is definately something to consider. I was in a guild that use to track everything with attendance, and you would get a different roll based on your attendance. So if you were 100% attendance, you would do a roll say /roll25 (Lowest number wins), if you were at 75% attendance, you did a /roll50, and so on. It was nice, but the problem was in the RNG. I could never show up and drop a 1. Collect my loot an leave. So the system you guys have is definately won that is more controlled. I may even come up with something similar to you loot system, or modify it differently. I like the idea of an in-game system where people can visually see their loot changes, because getting people to our website has always been an issue. I know its hard for WOW too, people don't like to go outside the game to play the game they play.

One of them is coming back, the other one I haven't heard from in months. My plan is to reach out to other smaller guilds or guilds who are in the same boat and see if people are willing to make a switch. A few that I have talked to, their GM's are the ones that are spotty, and log in just enough to not be able to take the guild away from them. I have been talking to one person specifically about joining as an "Recruit Officer" basically checking him out and seeing if he fits more into our guild before I give him the power that comes with it. Our guild is pretty open. If people want something, they come to me, and we discuss it. I've always had a system of "A guild by the people, for the people" kind of idea. I value opinions, and am always willing to consider something. If the majority of the guild wants something changed, we will do it. If not, lets talk about how we can improve the current state of things.

Some people get the idea that I'm a dictator who sits in a castle on the hill top and just barks instructions. I hardly make the choice of whats goes on, I just release it to the guild, and go from there.

Switching guilds have been considered, but its hard to leave it behind. At least on Uldaman, we have a strange balance of guilds. We have your hardcore (1 or 2) on Horde side, they are all elitest dicks. I've raided with some of them before, but I can't stand being yelled at over vent for something small. Or having to listen to the person smoking their bong over vent. So I created a guild based on what I didn't like. We are a close family, and very welcoming to new members, but on our server, people just go to where ever the easiest option is. We have new guilds popping up all over the place, and it makes it difficult for a level 25 guild to be productive. We were got achievements that others didnt have, and our numbers are SMALL compared to theirs.

I wish I knew why people didn't want to join our guild, so that I could see if it is fixable, or not.

Once again, I want to say a huge thank you for your time and comments. I do appreshiate it. And sorry for boring you so much that you have fallen asleep while reading it :p

Thanks again!
