Fall of Deathwing (LFR) questions

Hi folks,

I'm not finding clear, concise information on these encounters yet. LFR is my first experience with raiding, and while I tank 5-man heroics with no issue, tanking in LFR isn't a good way to try to learn the encounter.

Ultraxion Question:
I'm aware I get a new action button, Heroic Will. It now shows up in my UI, and I know I'm supposed to press it as a tank. BUT the "when" part isn't making much sense yet. There seem to be two events which I should use it for, Fading Light and Hour of Twilight. I understand that if the other tank gets Fading Light, I should taunt. If I get Fading Light, I should hit the extra button, right? I've read some things that imply tanks should alternately take Hour of Twilight, and burn defensive CDs during that. I'm assuming that means I DON'T push the new button, but instead just try to survive it?

Madness of Deathwing Questions:
This fight makes very little sense at the moment, even with the guide written here in the other thread. I've read the Tankspot writeup as well, and Wow Insider, and I'm still confused.

When the red tentacle comes up (not the arm or wing, the other thing that pops up after a couple seconds on a platform), a tank grabs it. What should the other tank be doing? No one needs to maintain aggro on the arm/wing, right?
That tentacle has an "Impale" ability. I get that it's bad. Deadly Boss Mods pipes up that the other tank has Impale, so I taunted. Other tank dies, raid leader chews me out for not taunting, but I did, so I figure I taunted incorrectly. Next tentacle, I taunt after DBM states I have Impale, well, that sure seemed wrong. I think if DBM says other tank has impale, I should taunt. If I get Impale, I should use defensive CDs? I'm a bear, so things like Survival Instincts/Barkskin? I've seen that Impale has a cast time - do I taunt from the other tank during this time, or immediately after it's cast? Do I use my CD's as soon as I see that I've got Impale on me, or wait for a cast-timer to nearly expire?

The tentacle also has a "Crush" ability, which is worded like a tank should point it away from the raid group. But, I'm on a platform, and it's facing me. How do you "aim" that away from the group?

Then there are adds, which some guides state use your CD's for those, but that's hard to understand how if I'm blowing CDs on the Impale ability. Stagger the CDs, like using SI for Impale, and then Barkskin for the adds? The timing of the platforms doesn't make it look like I can use my CDs on every platform.

thanks in advance.

Herro Solajin,

Let me start with welcome to the world of raiding and to semi-quote a fortune cookie, I foresee many raid wipes in your future. Getting that out of the way let me also comment that asking for a clear concise answer then presenting a text wall made me lol this early in the morning.

You may benefit from using the dungeon journal in the future to help you answer all of your questions because you have all the groundwork and homework for knowing an encounter done already and you just need to use the information available.

Ultraxion, Fading light is a debuff the boss casts on you that varies in time depending on RNG. Ask for a taunt if you can, wait until the debuff has 3 seconds left on its duration, then hit your button. Hour of Twilight for the normal mode of this encounter is something that will wipe your raid, its special ed LFR brother, well, not so much. As a tank with strong mitigation cd's just ignore the button for this move and use CD's when possible It needs to hit at least 3 people in 25 man or else it just wipes the raid anyway.

Madness
The mutated corruption (red tentacle in the back) come up one tank picks it up the other tank should be DPSing it as hard as he can to build threat for when he's about to taunt, remember tank dps matters. When the other tank gets impale cast on him he'll get a short debuff that says "you're about to get spanked, do something about it" You taunt during the cast as soon as you can, he uses a CD and lives. That's right you did it right the first time and the guy who told you otherwise can defecate in his hand. When you have aggro and get impale just worry about using your biggest CD to stop it from killing you. You can't aim crush it targets random players and either heal through it or players just fail at moving. All of the other adds in P! dont require a CD although any little bits help. Phase 2 every time you get shrapnel cast on you wait until 3 second until they cast and use dream to mitigate that damage. Then the big adds spawn stagger your cd's for these guys until they're dead because the DoT they give you hurts.

Good luck and happy raiding!

Yeah - sorry about the wall-o'-text. I wanted to get across that I actually was trying (and even did read the Dungeon Journal a couple times on it), these details were just not making sense.

Thanks for the response, I'm glad to have it spelled out clearly. It really doesn't sound that hard at all, just a matter of knowing what to do.

Thank you!

One of the mistakes that tanks make with Fading Light is pushing Heroic Will as soon as they receive the Fading Light debuff.

The damage from Fading Light doesn't happen until the debuff expires. If you are using DBM (and you should be using DBM) it will start counting down when there are only five seconds left on the Fading Light debuff. If you are not using DBM, then you will need to watch the timer on the debuff. In either case, once there less than five seconds left on Fading Light, then you use Heroic Will.

The logic behind it is thus ... Heroic Will lasts 5 seconds. Therefore, if you use it when Fading Light has 5 or more seconds remaining, you will return from Heroic Will and poof --- be dead. If you wait until there are less than five seconds on Fading Light, you will be in the normal realm when Fading Light expires and take no damage.

As for Hour of Twilight, in LFR everyone can use Heroic Will to escape Hour of Twilight. However, in normal modes the current tank should stay in, popping cool downs. You'll note that Thrall gives you a buff that reduces the duration of your cool downs by 50% and increases the duration they last by 100% - allowing you to pop the cool downs a little early and extending them through the entire Hour of Twilight cast. Best case, this means you are a 1.5 minute cool down cycle. Therefore, the second tank will own Ultraxion for the next Hour of Twilight cast (which comes 45 seconds later), using his cool downs. By the time the third cast comes up (another 45 seconds later, or 1.5 minutes after you took the first one) you're defensive cool downs will be ready and you can repeat the cycle once again.

The HoT tactics will change slightly if you are 25 man raiding, but spend some time with the Dungeon Journal reading about the abilities and put in the effort to make sense of them. You'll find a wealth of information there that you can string together into a successful raiding strategy.
